Pioneering organic biodynamic estate in Paarl dedicated to the holistic lifecycles of the earth and moon with slow winemaking and a gravity flow cellar.

Owner & Viticulturist
Johnathan Grieve
Avondale Wine Estate, nestled on the slopes of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains in Paarl, has been farmed since 1694. Guided by the philosophy "Terra Est Vita" (Earth is Life), the estate operates as a dynamic living system where soil, water, energy, plants, animals and people form an interconnected web of relationships.
As a certified Organic and Biodynamic producer, Avondale specialises in handcrafted premium wines that authentically reflect their natural surroundings. The estate spans 13 distinct soil types, each vinified in its own one-hectare block, giving precision at the farming level that carries through into the cellar. A state-of-the-art underground gravity-flow cellar minimises mechanical intervention, letting the fruit arrive in tank on its own weight. The estate nurtures its soils with organic composts while encouraging biodiversity throughout the vineyard ecosystem, creating a healthy, balanced environment that ensures the premium quality of every vintage.
Each Avondale wine originates from certified organic vineyards where slow winemaking practices guide production. The team employs minimal-intervention techniques (fermenting with naturally occurring yeasts, keeping sulfur levels low, and limiting additives), allowing nature to direct the process. This approach ensures their wines are genuine expressions of terroir, bursting with fresh flavors evident in each of their individually styled, classic wines.

Avondale WebsiteSpotlight - Jonty's Ducks
The flock that farms the vineyard
Every morning a flock of Pekin ducks is walked out into the Avondale vineyards to do a job most estates hand to a chemical. They hunt the snails that would otherwise strip the young vines, working the rows with an appetite no spray can match, then head back to the dam at dusk. No pesticide, no residue, just a very old idea doing very modern work.
They are named for Jonty, the nickname of proprietor Johnathan Grieve, and they are the clearest expression of the estate's BioLOGIC farming system: every part of a living farm supporting every other part. That thinking is what "Terra Est Vita", soil is life, actually looks like in practice, and it is why the wines that carry the ducks' name are the ones our buyers come back for.
