The Inspiration

Avondale was the first South African wine farm to utilize Qvevri in our winemaking. These ancient clay vessels from Georgia date back over 8000 years. They allow the wine to breathe as it ferments and ages in the clay, resulting in a beautiful brightness of fruit and minerality to the wine. The Avondale Qvevri is a red blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes that are made in the unique clay Qvevri vessels. The Qvevri presents a nose of succulent red fruits, violets, and spice. The unmistakable minerality and earthiness from the Qvevri clay vessel carry through to a palate with bright acidity, abundant fruit, and intriguing earthiness, shaping the wine’s distinctive flavor and finish.

About Avondale

Terra Est Vita: Soil is Life

Avondale Wine Estate, nestled on the slopes of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains in Paarl, has been farmed since 1694. Guided by the philosophy "Terra Est Vita" (Earth is Life), the estate operates as a dynamic living system where soil, water, energy, plants, animals and people form an interconnected web of relationships. As a certified Organic and Biodynamic producer, Avondale specialises in handcrafted premium wines that authentically reflect their natural surroundings. The estate spans 13 distinct soil types, each vinified in its own one-hectare block, giving precision at the farming level that carries through into the cellar. A state-of-the-art underground gravity-flow cellar minimises mechanical intervention, letting the fruit arrive in tank on its own weight. The estate nurtures its soils with organic composts while encouraging biodiversity throughout the vineyard ecosystem, creating a healthy, balanced environment that ensures the premium quality of every vintage. Each Avondale wine originates from certified organic vineyards where slow winemaking practices guide production. The team employs minimal-intervention techniques (fermenting with naturally occurring yeasts, keeping sulfur levels low, and limiting additives), allowing nature to direct the process. This approach ensures their wines are genuine expressions of terroir, bursting with fresh flavors evident in each of their individually styled, classic wines.
