The Inspiration

The Phoenix was born from a moment that tested our land and our resolve. After the January 2026 fire at Avondale, we were reminded - both painfully and profoundly - of nature’s capacity for renewal. As we watched protea seeds open and life quietly begin again in the days that followed, the name Phoenix felt inevitable. This wine is our way of honoring that moment: a symbol of resilience rooted in the soil, of renewal that does not erase loss but grows from it. The Phoenix 2018 reflects our belief that from fire comes regeneration, and from the land, enduring life.

About Avondale

Terra Est Vita: Soil is Life

Avondale Wine Estate, nestled on the slopes of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains in Paarl, has been farmed since 1694. Guided by the philosophy "Terra Est Vita" (Earth is Life), the estate operates as a dynamic living system where soil, water, energy, plants, animals and people form an interconnected web of relationships. As a certified Organic and Biodynamic producer, Avondale specialises in handcrafted premium wines that authentically reflect their natural surroundings. The estate spans 13 distinct soil types, each vinified in its own one-hectare block, giving precision at the farming level that carries through into the cellar. A state-of-the-art underground gravity-flow cellar minimises mechanical intervention, letting the fruit arrive in tank on its own weight. The estate nurtures its soils with organic composts while encouraging biodiversity throughout the vineyard ecosystem, creating a healthy, balanced environment that ensures the premium quality of every vintage. Each Avondale wine originates from certified organic vineyards where slow winemaking practices guide production. The team employs minimal-intervention techniques (fermenting with naturally occurring yeasts, keeping sulfur levels low, and limiting additives), allowing nature to direct the process. This approach ensures their wines are genuine expressions of terroir, bursting with fresh flavors evident in each of their individually styled, classic wines.
