The Inspiration
Owner Johnathan Grieve employs a “posse” of Pekin ducks, which patrol the vineyard looking for and destroying snails, which eat the vines every day of the lunar cycle. They get to work each morning via the Duck Mobile and have grown to be quite the attraction of the farm and lay their bodies to rest in their boarding house each evening. The ducks are an eco-friendly way to avoid using harmful chemical poisons to kill pests and act as the guardians of the vines on Avondale. The Jonty's Pekin Red is a Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon driven blend with generous flavors, fruit and structure.
About Avondale
Terra Est Vita: Soil is Life
Avondale Wine Estate, nestled on the slopes of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains in Paarl, has been farmed since 1694. Guided by the philosophy "Terra Est Vita" (Earth is Life), the estate operates as a dynamic living system where soil, water, energy, plants, animals and people form an interconnected web of relationships.
As a certified Organic and Biodynamic producer, Avondale specialises in handcrafted premium wines that authentically reflect their natural surroundings. The estate spans 13 distinct soil types, each vinified in its own one-hectare block, giving precision at the farming level that carries through into the cellar. A state-of-the-art underground gravity-flow cellar minimises mechanical intervention, letting the fruit arrive in tank on its own weight. The estate nurtures its soils with organic composts while encouraging biodiversity throughout the vineyard ecosystem, creating a healthy, balanced environment that ensures the premium quality of every vintage.
Each Avondale wine originates from certified organic vineyards where slow winemaking practices guide production. The team employs minimal-intervention techniques (fermenting with naturally occurring yeasts, keeping sulfur levels low, and limiting additives), allowing nature to direct the process. This approach ensures their wines are genuine expressions of terroir, bursting with fresh flavors evident in each of their individually styled, classic wines.
