Founder

Tinashe Nyamudoka

Kumusha in the Zimbabwean Shona language translates to "your home", "your roots" or "your origin". The name captures the essence of what world-renowned sommelier Tinashe Nyamudoka set out to create: wines that honor where they come from and speak authentically of their place.

Tinashe believes the best wines are representative of their region. After relocating from Zimbabwe to South Africa in 2008, his career arc (from polishing cutlery in his first restaurant role to becoming an award-winning sommelier and one of the country's most respected wine voices) gave him an intimate understanding of what defines exceptional South African wine. He is now building a Black-owned South African wine brand.

Minimal-intervention winemaking and natural fermentation are at the core of the Kumusha philosophy, aimed at letting the wine speak freely of its origin. From the flagship Kumusha range to the experimental Wild Mutupo series, these are wines that Tinashe would not only like to drink himself, but wines that are representative of what is leading the way for the new style of South African wines on the global stage.

Through a collaborative process where I respect the vine, the winemaker and the consumer, I try to build a brand of wines that represent and honor their roots.

Spotlight - Tinashe Nyamudoka's story

From the Roundhouse to Kumusha

Tinashe Nyamudoka's story begins as a Zimbabwean immigrant to South Africa, polishing cutlery at the Roundhouse. From there he worked his way to head sommelier at The Test Kitchen, one of the country's most celebrated restaurants, before founding Kumusha, a wine brand now recognized internationally.

That arc, from newcomer to internationally praised sommelier to founder, is the subject of Blind Ambition, the documentary feature built around his story. It is one of the most compelling narratives in South African wine, and a significant reason people connect with Kumusha the way they do.

It's a story that shaped the label itself: a leading black-owned African wine brand, built by a sommelier who never stopped working towards something of his own. Kumusha, meaning home, roots and origin in Shona, carries that journey in its name, the place it was always leading back to.
