The Emily

Although British born, Emily Hobhouse became an honorary South African through her selfless and courageous actions, which exposed the inhumanity of concentration camps during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). This wine is dedicated to her memory, and to brave women fighting for what is right, all over the world. The Emily grows in the oldest viticultural soil in the world - decomposed granite on the lower slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. The vineyard sits in the Helderberg Ward, the coolest pocket of Stellenbosch; cool day-breezes off False Bay and cold night air falling down the mountain give even ripening and good natural acidity. The vineyards are meticulously hand-tended and the crop is reduced to ensure maximum quality. Organic and biodynamic practices are employed - no pesticides, no herbicides, no chemical sprays. The wine is predominantly unwooded Chardonnay, blended with a small amount of lightly wooded Pinot Noir from Elgin. Both varieties were whole-bunch pressed and allowed native-yeast fermentation. The Pinot Noir is transferred to aged wooden barrels, while the Chardonnay stays in tanks to mature on the lees before the two are blended. An extraordinary value, premium quality Rosé!
