The Inspiration
Mountainside Syrah comes from two mature mountainside vineyards overlooking False Bay, where the famous Cape Doctor brings cooling South-Easterly winds through summer. Rocky, gravelly soils help shape a finer, more restrained style of Syrah, where perfume, spice and fynbos sit alongside the fruit rather than being overwhelmed by it.
In the cellar, the approach is intentionally gentle with longer cold soaking and delicate handling. The result is a Syrah of enticing aromatics, ripe fruit with soft tannins and a smooth finish that really overdelivers at this value. In a category often associated with power and richness, Mountainside takes the path less traveled, favoring restraint, elegance and freshness.
That makes it a natural fit for The Winery of Good Hope philosophy: thoughtful vineyard sourcing, minimal intervention and a focus on individuality over excess - making wines that express the Cape clearly without unnecessary manipulation.
About The Winery of Good Hope

The Winery of Good Hope was founded on a spirit of optimism and the philosophy of "Drink Well. Do Good." - a belief in the extraordinary potential of South Africa, its vineyards and its people. Created by the Radford Dale team as a place to explore new ideas, it has become a testing ground for vineyard sites, meso-climates and innovative techniques, always with the same uncompromising focus on quality and individuality that defines the wider house.
Based in Stellenbosch in the Cape of Good Hope, it is more than a winery - it represents an alternative way of thinking, being and doing. From the slopes of the Helderberg, wines are made with traditional, natural viticultural and winemaking methods, supported by fully accredited environmental, ethical and social-upliftment practices.
That progressive thinking extends beyond the vineyard. A 2024 relaunch introduced recyclable packaging and lightweight 410 g bottles as part of a broader philosophy of care and responsibility. Sustainability is viewed as an ongoing process, encompassing how the land is farmed, how people are treated and the materials used throughout the value chain.
The Winery of Good Hope also supports the Land of Hope Educational Trust, established in 2007 to create educational opportunities and now chaired by Cathy van Zyl MW, Africa's first Master of Wine. It gives "Good Hope" a purpose that extends beyond the wines - investing in people, opportunity and the future.
