The Inspiration
Full Berry Pinotage is a delicious take on Pinotage with the hard edges removed - lip smacking, juicy fruit, freshness, moreish. Fruit comes from two mature vineyards in northern Stellenbosch and Voor Paardeberg, rooted in decomposed quartz, granite and weathered granite-derived soils that help preserve freshness and a subtle spicy mineral character.
The defining technique is whole-berry carbonic maceration: spontaneous wild fermentation begins inside the intact berries, dramatically reducing skin contact and extraction. Rather than emphasizing Pinotage's more rustic side, this approach produces a gentler, juicier and more textural expression with supple tannins and bright fruit at the center.
The style deliberately highlights the variety's heritage - cherry-like fruit from its Pinot Noir parentage and spice from Cinsaut - while avoiding bitterness and harsh tannins. Cranberry, savory spice and a touch of coffee sit over a fresh palate, making this a particularly modern expression of South Africa's signature grape. The Winery of Good Hope was founded on a spirit of optimism and the philosophy of "Drink Well. Do Good." - a belief in the extraordinary potential of South Africa, its vineyards and its people. Created by the Radford Dale team as a place to explore new ideas, it has become a testing ground for vineyard sites, meso-climates and innovative techniques, always with the same uncompromising focus on quality and individuality that defines the wider house.
Based in Stellenbosch in the Cape of Good Hope, it is more than a winery - it represents an alternative way of thinking, being and doing. From the slopes of the Helderberg, wines are made with traditional, natural viticultural and winemaking methods, supported by fully accredited environmental, ethical and social-upliftment practices.
That progressive thinking extends beyond the vineyard. A 2024 relaunch introduced recyclable packaging and lightweight 410 g bottles as part of a broader philosophy of care and responsibility. Sustainability is viewed as an ongoing process, encompassing how the land is farmed, how people are treated and the materials used throughout the value chain.
The Winery of Good Hope also supports the Land of Hope Educational Trust, established in 2007 to create educational opportunities and now chaired by Cathy van Zyl MW, Africa's first Master of Wine. It gives "Good Hope" a purpose that extends beyond the wines - investing in people, opportunity and the future.
